Background
At the National Park Committee Meeting No.5/2517 on July 10, 1974, the Royal Forest Department was assigned to investigate the conditions of the Khao Chamao - Khao Wong Forests, in Chanthaburi Province, in order to establish it as a national park. Dr. Boonsong Lekakul, Association for the Conservation of Wildlife Thailand secretariat, submitted a letter dated July 17, 1974, and the Natural Resources Conservation Club, Srinakharinwirot University, Pathumwan, issued a letter No. Cho O Tho. 020/2517 dated July 22, 1974. Both letters requested to consider establishing the Khao Chamao Forest area as a national park since it is the headwater of Rayong Province and consists of various plants and wildlife species. Meanwhile, the Siam Rath Newspaper, dated August 20, 2517, published the article, "The Call of the Khao Chamao Forest," written by Mr. Paiboon Suksumek, calling for considering to establish Khao Chamao - Wong Forest as a forest park or a national park to preserve the forest before it is invaded.
The Royal Forest Department then issued an order No. 1017/2517 dated August 30, 1974, for officers to conduct a survey of the forest boundaries and conditions of the Khao Chamao - Khao Wong Forest in Rayong and Chanthaburi Provinces. The survey found that the area is a watershed rainforest with an abundant wildlife and stunning natural features. On April 4, 1975, the National Park Division of the Royal Forest Department presented the survey result to the National Park Board at a meeting which resolved to designate the area as a national park. There has been a royal decree specifying the areas of Khao Chamao Forest land in Thung Khwai Kin Sub-district, Klaeng District, Rayong Province, and Kaeng Hang Maeo Sub-district, Tha Mai District, Chanthaburi Province, and the areas of Khao Wong Forest in Kong Din Sub-district, Klaeng District, Rayong Province, and Na Yai Am Sub-district, Tha Mai District, Chanthaburi Province to be a national park. It was announced in the Government Gazette, Volume 92, Section 267, dated December 31, 1975, as the 13th National Park of Thailand.
