Information  

        The area of Phu Pha Lek National Park is approximately 252,898 rai, or about 404 square kilometers, covering the areas of Song Dao, Waritchaphum, Nikhom Nam Un, Kut Bak and Phu Phan District, Sakon Nakhon Province, Wang Sam Mo District, Udon Thani Province, and Somdet and Kham Muang District, Kalasin Province and the areas of Dong Phanna National Reserved Forest, Dong Phra Chao Forest, Phu Wong Forest, Kut Hai Forest, Nanai Forest, Non Udom Forest, Ba Yao Forest, Hua Na Kham Forest, Nong Ya Chai Forest, and Kaeng Ka-Am Forest.

Background        

          In 1995, the Royal Forest Department ordered officials to conduct a preliminary survey in the area. Subsequently, there was an order no.1162/2539 from the Royal Forest Department dated June 14, 1996, 1162/1996 No. ordering government officials to perform official duties by assigning Mr. Phanom Pongsuwan, a Forestry Technical Officer Level 7 under the National Park Division to conduct a further survey and establish some conservation forest areas in the Dong Panna National Reserved Forests, Dong Phra Chao Forest of Song Dao District, Phu Wong Forest of Waritchaphum, Nikhom Nam Un and Kut Bak District, Kaeng Khaen Forest of Kut Bak District, Nong Ya Sai Forest of Wang Sam Mo District, Udon Thani province and expand to cover the Phu Phan National Reserved Forests of Kham Muang and Somdet District, Kaeng Ka Am Forest of Somdet District, Kalasin Province to be a National Park according to the National Park 1961.

        Mr. Phanom Pongsuwan collected information and studied history of the above National Reserved Forest, together with searching more information from documents published by relevant government agencies at the Computer Center of Khon Kaen University, it was found that the area was the first "Pa Rak Nam" (Forests Love Water) project which was a royal project of Her Majesty the Queen on December 20, 1982
. Later, in 1994, Mr. Phong Leng Yi, the director of the Royal Forest Department, was on an inspection visit and realized the importance of the area. Therefore, he ordered to explore the area as a preparation of establishing it as a national park and named it Phu Pha Lek-Phu Pha Hak National Park, and later in 1996, it was approved to remove the word "Phu Pha Hak" and named it as "Phu Pha Lek National Park" since then.

         From surveying the protected forests to prepare for the establishment of Phu Pha Lek National Park, it was found that a total area is approximately 404 square kilometers or 252,898 rai, and details are as follows:
Sakon Nakhon Provincial Government had conducted the survey on some areas of the Dong Panna National Reserved Forest, Dong Phra Chao Forest in the areas of Tha Sila, Pathum Wapi and Song Dao Sub-district, Song Dao District, an area of 37,250 rai (59.6 square kilometers), and combined with Phu Wong National Reserved Forest in the area of Kham Bo, Waritchaphum and Kho Khieo Sub-district, Wariphum District, an area of 67,600 rai (108.16 square kilometers), and combined with Kut Hai National Reserved Forests, Nanai Forest, Non Udom Forest in the areas of Nikhom Nam Un and Suwanakham Sub-district, Nikhom Nam Un District and Kut Hai Sub-district, Kut Bak District, an area of 22,575 rai (36.12 square kilometers), and combined with Kaeng Khaen National Reserved Forest in the area of Kut Bak Sub-district, Kut Bak District, Khok Phu Sub-district, Phu Phan District, an area of 32,325 rai (51.72 square kilometer). The total area is 159,750 rai or about 255.6 square kilometers.

        Udon Thani Provincial Goverment conducted a survey on some areas of the National Reserved Forest, Ba Yao Forest, Hua Na Kham Forest, Na Yung Forest, Nong Kung Thap Ma Forest, Nong Ya Sai Forest in the areas of Pha Suk Sub-district, Wang Sam Mo District, Udon Thani Province, a total area of 10,315 rai (16.5 square kilometers).
Kalasin Provincial Government has conducted a survey of some conservation forest areas in the Phu Phan National Reserved Forest in the areas of Na Than and Dip Chi Sub-district, Kham Muang District, an area of 86,185 rai (137.896 square kilometers), and combined with the Kaeng Kaam National Reserved Forest in the area of Na Bon and Sang Badan Sub-district, Somdet District, an area of 5,625 rai (9 square kilometers). The total area is 91,810 rai (146.9 square kilometers).

        The Phu Pha Lek National Park is located between latitude 170 15'-160 49' north and longitude 103O 15'-103O 50' east. It is a part of the Phu Phan Mountain range, which stretches in the east-west direction with a total length of about 54 kilometers. Most of the area is 200–600 meters above mean sea level. The highest mountain in the area is Phu Ang So, at an altitude of 695 meters. The forest area of Phu Pha Lek National Park is home to important streams like the Songkhram River, Yam Stream, and Um Stream. The soil characteristics are generally sandy loam found in dry evergreen forest, mixed deciduous forest, and laterite soil found in the deciduous dipterocarp forest. The rocks found  in the area are mostly sandstone

 


 

 

         The National Park area has a monsoon climate. Summer is from March to May and is very hot, the temperature is about 40 degrees Celsius, and there are frequent wildfires across the area. The rainy season is from June to October. And the winter is from November to February, when the weather is cold and the temperatures is about 15-20 degrees Celsius, and the annual rainfall is about 1,000-1,300 mm. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

   


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

            

The plant community
        Phu Pha Lek National Park is a fertile forest, composed of deciduous dipterocarp forest, distributed on the piedmont plateau and steep slopes to an altitude of 500 meters above mean sea level. Plants found include Burma Sal, Shorea siamensis, Hairy Keruing, Dipterocarpus tuberculatus Roxb, Burma Padauk, Terminalia corticosa Pierre ex Laness,Pentaptera tomentosa Roxb, Sindora siamensis, Cratoxylum formosum subsp, Morinda exserta Roxb, etc. Undergrowth vegetation includes Arundinaria pusilia, mixed with shrubs, and herbaceous plants. Mixed deciduous forests cover most of the area of the National Park and can be found on the piedmont plains and hillsides up to at altitude of 600 meters above mean sea level. Plants found include Dalbergia oliveri, Xylia xylocarpa, Burma padauk, Irvingia malayana, Hog plum, Cotton tree, Afzelia xylocarpa, Tummy-wood, Ivory, Phyllanthus emblica, etc. The undergrowth flora includes long-sheath bamboo, Gigantochloa albociliata Munro, Dendrocalamus strictus, Harrisonia perforata (Blanco) Merr, Barleria strigosa Willd, Melientha suavis Pierre, etc. Dry evergreen forests are found along the streams of moist valleys. The plant species found are D. turbinatus Gaertn. f, Jambul, Machang, Devil tree, (Aglaia gigantea (Pierre) Pellegr.), Burmese grape, Gonocaryum lobbianum (Miers) Kurz, etc. Lowland plants include vines, palms, and various herbs. that grow on the stone courtyard on the way to Phu Pha Lek at elevation of about 400-550 meters above mean sea level. It is a sparse forest with stunted growth of perennials. Most have thick leaves. Common plants found are shrubs such as Anneslea fragrans Wall, Schima wallichii choisy, Cajuput tree, Castanopsis spp, Antidesma puncticulatum Miq, and Lyonia Foliasa. On the stone terrace, there are lichen, lithophile, Eria lasiopetala (Willd.) Ormerod, Doritis pulcherrima Lindl, Climbing Bird’s Nest Fern, Anisopappus chinensis, white earrings, Bulrush, Indian borage, Platostoma cochinchinense, Wishbone flower, Burmannia disticha, plains blackfoot, golden bladderwort, and Utricularia delphinioides. The wild animals found include barking deer, pig-tailed monkeys, Burmese hares, chipmunks, Mus, Moles, Porcupine, Mongoose, Palm Civet, Crested Serpent-Eagle, Green Pigeons, Coucals, Indochinese roller, Asian barbet, Oriole, Red-necked bulbul Ashy Drongo, Spotted Babbler, Gecko, light-colored forest Lizard, Elongated tortoise, Radiated Ratsnake, Cobra, king cobra, Sumatran Green Pit Viper, Uned leather pattern bullfrog, Spotted narrow-mouthed frog, Black-striped Frog, Swamp Frog, Toad, Chinese edible frog, and Malayan flying frog (Rhacophorus leucomystex.), and so on. 



How to get there by car :  

             Phu Pha Lek National Park Headquarters is located in Song Dao District, Sakon Nakhon Province, slightly downward to Udon Thani Province, so the most convenient route to enter the area is starting from Udon Thani Province.

          • Via Udon Thani-Sakon Nakhon route: Take National Highway No. 22 until reaching the main junction at the milestone No. 95 (location of Sawang Daen Din Prison), turn right onto the Ro Po Cho Ban Tai - Don Som Hong road heading for Ban Phon Sawang Intersection, Turn right at the milestone No. 17onto the Ro Po Cho Ban Phon Sawang-Phu Pha Lek road. Continue for another 6 kilometers to arrive at Phu Pha Lek National Park Headquarters.

           • Via Udon Thani-Sakon Nakhon Route: After reaching the milestone No. 95, continue straight for another 20 kilometers to reach the market of Sawang Daen Din district. Turn right onto the route of Sawang Daen Din -Song Dao District and after passing the District turn left onto the Ro Po Cho Ban Tai Road - - Don Som Som Road. Turn into the National Park Headquarters at the milestone No. 17th as mentioned above. The total distance from Udon Thani to Phu Pha Lek National Park Headquarters is about 82 km.
