Background

In 1975, Mr. Surachat Chamnansilp, a headman of Na Yung Sub-district, Nam Som District, Udon Thani Province, submitted a letter to the Royal Forest Department informting that the head of the O Do. 2 Forest Protection Department area and him had surveyed the forest areas in Na Yung sub-district, in the Phu Phan Mountain range, and found that its appearance is similar to that of the Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary in Chonburi but the different is that the mountain ridges of Na Yung Sub-district are beautiful and the waterfalls here are more beautiful and suitable for improvement as a recreational place. Therefore, the Royal Forest Department sent the officials of Maintenance Department to check this information and found that the forests of Na Yung sub-district are under the other hard woods concession project (O Do. 25), Section 10, Nam Som District, Udon Thani Province, but have not been logged yet. The forests are quite beautiful and deserve to be developed into a Forest Park. The Royal Forest Department, therefore on December 26, 1975, announced the establishment of a forest office and is in charge of the Udon Thani Provincial Forest Office.

Since the forest areas that have been established as a forest park have not been explored in detail yet. The Royal Forestry Department, therefore, assigned the Udon Thani Regional Forest Office to carry out this work. The further survey was found that Na Yung-Nam Som Forest Park was under the Other Hard Woods Concession Project (O Do. 26), Section 7 and Section 8 in Phue District, Udon Thani Province and the Other Hard Woods Concession Project (O Do.25) Section 10 in Na Yung Sub-district, Nam Som District, Udon Thani Province. Also, it is located in the Na Yung-Nam Som National Reserved Forest, with an area of about 20.98 square kilometers. The Na Yung-Nam Som Forest Park has later been transferred to the Udon Thani Regional Forest Office under the National Park Division, Royal Forest Department.

Then, the Royal Forest Department received a report from the Office of Natural Resources Conservation, stating that the Na Yung-Nam Som Forest Park and the nearby forest areas which are part of the Phran Prao-Kang Kai National Reserved Forest, of the Khao Kaeo-Dong Pak Chom National Reserved Forest and of the the Na Yung-Nam Som National Reserved Forest, a total area of approximately 215,000 rai (344 square kilometers). The forest conditions are fertile and contain beautiful natural conditions that are suitable for educational and tourist purpose, it should be established as a national park. The Royal Forest Department of the National Park has ordered the superintendent of Na Yung-Nam Som forest park to conduct a preliminary survey in order to establish the areas as a Na Yung-Nam Som National Park.
