Information

        Khao Pu - Khao Ya National Park is named after a well-known local mountain in Phatthalung Province. According to the villagers' belief’s, Khao Pu is a sacred mountain, as it is the dwelling place of the soul "Ta Pu", a semi-god, respected by Khao Pu dwellers and public. The Khao Pu-Khao Ya National Park covers an area including Thung Song and Cha Uat District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Ratsada, Huai Yot, Mueang and Na Yong District, Trang Province, and Srinakarin, Si Banphot, Pa Phayom and Kong Ra District, in Phatthalung Province. It is located in the complex Banthat Mountain range, which is home to a dense tropical rain forest and is also known as "the pure forest." There are treehouse lodges (Tarzan houses) along a creek in the middle of the National Park, in the plain area. Khao Pu-Khao Ya National Park has approximately 433,750 rai, or 694 square kilometers.

Background

         Mr. Phong Leng Yi (Former Director of Wildlife Conservation Division) suggested that Phatthalung Province create a non-hunting area in Thale Noi, which is well-known area for visitors. There is a waterfowl park which is home to more than 126 beautiful and rare bird species, encompassing at least 10,000 birds. There is also a forest area in the Banthat mountain range, which is the last natural forest in Phatthalung. It has many attractive features, such as Nan Plio Waterfall, Khao Khram Waterfall, and Matcha Cave and as a result  it is suitable as a national park for tourists, and received cooperation and support from Mr. Kitti Prathumkaeo, Governor of Phatthalung Province, teachers and the people of Phatthalung.

           The National Park Division, Royal Forest Department, conducted a survey for the National Park Board, and it was designated a National Park in resolution in meeting 2/2523 on August 8, 1980.  A royal decree stipulating the Thueak Khao Banthat Forest in Nam Tok Sub-district, Thung Song District, Wang Ao Sub-district, Cha Uat District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Nong Bua, Nong Prue, Tha Ngio, Khao Pun, Huai Yot and Pak Chaem Sub-district, Huai Yot District, Nam Phut and Chong Sub-district, Mueang Trang District, Trang Province, Taphan and Khao Pu Sub-district, Si Banphot and Khuan Khanun District, Ban Na Sub-district, Mueang Phatthalung District, Kong Ra and Charat Sub-district, Kong Ra District, in Phatthalung Province. It became Thailand’s 42nd National Park in an announcement is in the Government Gazette, Volume 99, Part 72, dated May 27, 1982.

            Khao Pu - Khao Ya National Park covers an area of approximately 433,750 rai or 694 square kilometers in the area of Nam Tok Sub-district, Thung Song District, Wang Ang and Khao Phra Thong Sub-district, Cha Uat District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Nong Prue, Nong Bua and Khao Phrai Sub-district, Ratsada District, Tha Ngio, Khao Pun, Huai Yot, Nai Tao and Pak Chaem Sub-district, Huai Yot District, Nam Phut Sub-district, Muang District, Chong and Lamo Sub-district, Na Yong District, Trang Province. Chumphon, Lamsin and Ban Na Sub-district, Srinakarin District, Tapan and Khao Phu Sub-district, Si Banphot District, Ko Tao and Lan Khoi Sub-district, Pa Phayom District, Kong Ra, Charat, Khlong Sai Khao, Khlong Chaloem and Somwang Sub-district, Kong Ra District, Phatthalung Province. It is located on the east coast of the southern region of Thailand, between latitudes of 8-9 degrees north. The headquarters location is in Moo 9, Khao Phu Sub-district, Si Banphot District, Phatthalung Province and the territories bordering the park are as follows:

North: Thung Song District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province

South: Khao Banthat Wildlife Sanctuary and Kong Ra District, Phatthalung Province

East: Cha-uat District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Pa Phayom and Srinakarin District, Phatthalung Province

West: Na Yong, Mueang, Huai Yot and Ratsada District, Trang Province

            The park covers 209,615 rai (335.384 square kilometers) of 4 districts in Trang Province: Na Yong District 21,800 rai (34.88 square kilometers), Mueang District 74,175 rai (118.68 square kilometers), Huai Yot District 92,065 rai, Ratsada District 21,575 rai (34.52 square kilometers) in the Thueak Khao Banthat National Reserved Forest, plot 1 part 1–3 and Khao Phun National Reserved Forest.

Itcovers an area of 166,760 rai (266.816 square kilometers) across 4 districts in Phattalung Province: Pa Phayom District 59,030 rai (94.448 square kilometers), Si Banphot District 52,855 rai (84.568 square kilometers), Srinakarin District 34,050 rai (54.48 square kilometers), Kong Ra District 20,825 rai (33.32 square kilometers) in the Phu Khao Banthat National Reserved Forest, plot 2 part 1–3 and Nai Wang National Reserved Forest and Khao Wang National Raserved Forest, Khao Khap Forest, Khao Khiao Forest, and Khao Ya Ngong Forest and National Permanent Forests according to the Cabinet resolution, Ao Ramkan – Nai Wang Forest, Ko Yung Nai Wang Forest, and Phraya Krung Chin Forest.

In Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, it covers an area of 57,375 rai, or 2 districts; Cha-uat district, 22,225 rai (35.56 square kilometers), and Thung Song district, 35,150 rai (56.24 square kilometers) in the Khuan Kaeo National Reserved Forest, Khlong Tom Forest and Thung Lan Sae Forest and Ban Khuan Ok National Reserved Forest, Ban Nam Tok

    The terrain is of high, complex, folded mountains which are part of the Banthat Mountain range and run on a north-south axis. Peaks includes Banthat Mountain, Nakhon Si Thammarat Mountain, Khao Pu - Khao Ya, Khao Pa Rae, Khao Sam Roi Yot, Khao Wat Tham, Khao Phraya Krung Chin, and Khao Pa Hong. Khao Hin Taen, which is the highest peak at approximately 877 meters above sea level.

The Khao Pu - Khao Ya National Park is the source of the Trang River and Pak Pha-nang River, originated in Pattalung Province, such as the Lamai Canal, Mai Siap Canal, and Nam Sai Canal, which flow together into Cha-Uat Canal and the Pak Pha-nang River. It is also a water source for waterways in Trang Province, including Lam Phura Canal and Lamo Canal, which flow into the Trang River.
 
 
 

   The rainy season runs from May to December, and the heaviest rainy period is from October to November. The average annual rainfall at Khao Pu - Khao Ya National Park headquarters is about 2000–2,500 mm. The temperatures recorded were between 20 and 35 degrees Celsius, with an average temperature of 27 degrees Celsius.

      The rainfall data is from a storage location at National Park Headquarters, Moo 9, Khao Phu Sub-district, Si Banphot District, Phatthalung Province, and has yearly figures  as follows:

     - In the year 2007, rainfall totaled 2,230.5 mm.

     - In the year 2013, rainfall totaled 1,940.2 mm.

     - In the year 2008, rainfall totaled 2,256.6 mm.

     - In the year 2014, rainfall totaled 2,107.0 mm.

     - In the year 2552, rainfall totaled 2,362.0 mm.

     - In the year 2558, rainfall totaled 1,598.5 mm.                        

     - In the year 2553, rainfall totaled 2,208.5 mm.

     - In the year 2559, rainfall totaled 2,420.6 mm.

     - In the year 2011, rainfall totaled 3,459.7 mm.

     - In the year 2017, rainfall totaled 4,030.1 mm.

     - In the year 2555, rainfall totaled 1,616.8 mm.

   Khao Phu - Khao Ya National Park is primarily a tropical rain forest ecosystem that includesplants such as Malabar Iron Wood, Lum Pho (Intsia palembanica Miq.), Yang (Dipterocarpus alatus), Krabak (Anisoptera costata Korth.), Champak, Pikul (Mimusops elengi L.), Khai Khiao (Parashorea stellata), Nak But (Mesua ferrea L), Phaya Mai (Podocarpus neriifolius D.Don), Lao Cha-on (Oncosperma tigillarium), Mak Phon (Orania sylvicola), Sugar Palm. Lower ground plants include Chang Ronghai (Borassodendron machadonis), rattan, wild orchids, herbs, and Aloe Vera. As Khao Pu - Khao Ya National Park borders the Thueak Khao Banthat Wildlife Sanctuary, there are wild animals and they constantly migrate between the two areas.

From the survey of wildlife species in the national park, the animals found are as follows:

     Mammals: 60 species, including

Chamois, Tapir, Sun Bear, Fishing Cat, Barking Deer, Greater Mouse-Deer, Dusky Leaf Monkey, Banded Linsang, Yellow-Throated Marten, Etruscan Shrew, Banded Palm Civet, Cream-Colored Giant Squirrel, Black Giant Squirrel, Large Flying Fox, and Black-Bearded Tomb Bat.

     Birds: 286 species, including

Yellow Bittern, Little Bronze-Cuckoo, Red-Billed Malkoha, Ruddy Kingfisher, The White-Crowned Hornbill, Brown Barbet, Black-and-Yellow Broadbill, Green Iora, Babblers, Rufous-Tailed Tailorbird, Mugimaki Flycatcher, Long-Billed Spiderhunter, and Crimson-Breasted Flowerpecker.

     Reptiles: 67 species, including

Spiny Turtle, Softshell Turtle, Roughneck Monitor, Dumeril's Monitor, Monitor Lizard, Bengal Monitor, Grass Lizard, Blue-Crested Lizard, Curved-Toed Geckos, Blind Snake, and Spitting Cobra.

      Amphibians, including

The Rhinoceros Frog, Hose's Rock Frog, White-Lipped Frog, Tenasserim Frog, Rough-Sided Frog, Spotted Litter Frog, Long-Nosed Frog, Smith's Litter Frog, Dwarf Toad, Grass Frog, and Common Green Frog.

      Fish: 15 species, including

Freshwater Eels, Catfish, Macrognathus, Silver Rasbora, Slender Danios, Spanner Barb, and Cave Sheatfish.

      Insects: 70 species, including

Giant Honey Bee, Click Beetles, Five-Horned Beetle, Fulgorid Bug, Wizard Butterfly, Great Helen Butterfly, Malayan Jungle Glory, Tufted Jungle King, Leopard Lacewing, and the Malayan Birdwing.

How to get there by car :           

Khao Pu - Khao Ya National Park is 37 kilometers from the city of Phatthalung.

Public transportation:

         Take a bus or air-conditioned bus from the Southern Bus Terminal, Bangkok to  Phatthalung Province, then take the Phatthalung - Khao Phu - Dam bus to the National Park Headquarters. Trains are also available from Bangkok Main Train Station.

By private car:

         From Phatthalung, take National Highway 41, Phatthalung - Nakhon Si Thammarat route, a distance of 20 kilometers to the "Pho Thong Intersection." Turn left onto Provincial Highway 4164 (Khuan Khanun - Khao Pu Road) for about 17 kilometers, where visitors will see the National Park sign. Turn left and travel for another 4 kilometers to reach the Khao Pu - Khao Ya National Park Headquarters (located in Moo 9, Khao Pu Sub-district, Si Banphot District, Phatthalung Province).

Note: Provincial Highway  4164 merges with National Highway 4 in Trang Province.
