Nam Phong National Park is named after the origin of Phong Stream, that flows into Khuean Ubol Ratana Reservoir (Formerly Nam Phong Reservoir), and is a national park established according to the proposal of Khon Kaen Province. Originally it was called "Nam Phong-Phu Meng" because part of the area was in the Phu Meng Mountain range. Nam Phong National Park is located in the western part of Khon Kaen Province, next to Ubol Ratana Dam. It covers the areas of National Reserved Forests, Sok Tae Forest, Phu Meng Forest, Khok Luang Forest, Khok Luang Forest, Plan Three, Phu Pha Dam Forest, Phu Pha Daeng Forest in Ubon Rat, Ban Fang, Nong Rue and Mancha Khiri District, and Khok Pho Chai Minor District Khon Kaen Province, and some areas of Ban Thaen and Kaeng Khro District, Chaiyaphum Province. It has an area of approximately 197 square kilometers, or 123,125 rai.
Background
Khon Kaen Province submitted a letter dated March 30, 1995 requesting the Royal Forest Department to consider designating the Phu Meng National Reserved Forest, the Khok Luang Forest, the third plot of the Khok Luang Forest in Khon Kaen Province to be a National Park. These forests, which had already been designated as conservation forests according to the Cabinet resolutions on 10 and 17 March 1992, are watershed forests with beautiful scenery and unique features. Khon Kae Province has appointed a committee to survey and improve the boundary to get acceptance from the people on all sides of the area. There is no problem with the boundary line and the people's agricultural land in the forest area.
The Royal Forest Department has sent officers to conduct a survey of such forest areas and found out that although the forest areas are abundant, they do not qualify to be a national park. However, the officers considered that the forests should be preserved for the people of Khon Kaen Province and the conservation areas should be extending to cover the conservation forest areas nearby such as Khok Luang Forest, Phu Pha Dam Forest, and Phu Pha Daeng Forest. Chaiyaphum and Sok Tae forests, and the area of Khuean Ubol Ratana Reservoir, Khon Kaen Province as national park because the forest conditions are still fertile with unique features and interesting scenic spots.
Nam Phong National Park has a royal decree Sok Tae Forest land in the local Khuean Ubolratana, Thung Pong and Khok Sung Sub-district of Ubolatana District, Na Wa and Nong Kung Soen Sub-district of Phu Wiang District, Khok Ngam, Pa Wai Nang and Ban Fang Sub-district of Ban Fang District and Ban Phue Sub-district of Nong Ruea District in Khon Kaen Province, and Phu Meng Forest and Khok Luang Forest in the area of Ban Meng and Yang Kham Sub-district of Nong Ruea District, Kham Khaen and Na Ngam Sub-district of Mancha Khiri District, Pa Manao Sub-district of Ban Fang District in Khon Kaen Province and Sa Phang, Ban Tao and Nong Khu Sub-district of Ban Thaen District in Chaiyaphum province and Khok Luang Forest, Phu Pha Dam Forest, Phu Pha Daeng Forest, and Khok Luang Forest - third plot in the area of Na Ngam Sub-district of Mancha Khiri District, Ban Khok and Sup Sombun Sub-district of Khok Pho Chai Minor District and Mancha Khiri District in Khon Kaen Province and Nong Sang, Ban Kaeng and Chong Sam Mo Sub-district of Kaeng Khro District in Chaiyaphum Province, declared in the Government Gazette, Volume 117, Part 105 Ko, dated 15 November 2000.

The Nam Phong National Park, the condition of the area is characterized by the morphology of sandstone mountains, including the Khao Wiharn formation. In the Phu Kradueng formation and Sao Khua formation, the soil condition is sandy loam, comprising Khorat soil series, Satuk soil series, Borabu soil series, and Nam Phong soil series. The area consists of important mountain ranges such as Phu Phan Kham Mountain range, Phu Meng Mountain, Phu Pha Dam Mountain, and Phu Pha Daeng Mountain. These mountains are about 200–600 meters above mean sea level, similar to most of the mountains in Northeast. These mountain ranges mentioned stretch in a long line from north to south, parallel to the Khuean Ubol Ratana Reservoir. It is the source of the watershed, part of many important streams such as Phong Stream, Choen Stream, Chi Stream, etc. , namely the part in the Phu Phan Kham Mountain range which is in the north and the part in Phu Meng Mountain range and Phu Pha Dum and Phu Pha Daeng which is in the south. The area on the western side has steep slopes alternating with cliffs in some areas and there is some part reaching the reservoir plains below while on the eastern side there exist foothill plains. Season's Nam Phong National Park is divided into three seasons: summer, rainy season and winter. The summer runs from March to May and the average temperature in April is high. The rainy season between June and October and precipitation is very high during August-October. The winter between November-February and the lowest average temperature is in January which is influenced by the high-pressure trough in the south of China. The average annual temperature is 23.8 degrees Celsius, and the highest is 30.7 degrees Celsius, with an average annual rainfall of about 1,145.3 millimeter

An area of about 80% of the Nam Phong National Park is covered by mixed deciduous forest, savanna forest, and in some areas bamboo forests can be found. Deep into the central part of the national park, both in the Phu Phan Kham Mountains and the Phu Meng Mountains, there is a completely dry evergreen forest and is classified as a headwater forest of the stream flowing into the Ubol Ratana Dam. This area is also a habitat for wildlife and important medicinal herbs in the park. Precious plants commonly found include Burma Sal, Shorea siamensis, Hairy Keruing, Irvingia malayana , Parinari anamense Hance, and Hopea ferrea Laness. Furthermore, undergrowth plants such as Cycas siamensis Miq, vines, spiny plants, and many herbs are found. Most wild animals live in dry evergreen forests of Phu Meng Mountain range because it is a rich source of food and is rarely disturbed by humans. The wild animals that can be seen are medium-sized and small animals such as Wild Boar (Sus scrofa), Indian Muntjac, Foxes, Hedgehogs, Sunda Pangolin, Burmese Hare, Red Junglefowl Fowls, snakes, and various kinds of birds, etc. |
How to get there by car :
Nam Phong National Park is located next to the Ubol Ratana Dam, Ban Phue Sub-district, Nong Ruea District, a National Park. It is the national park that is located closest to the city of Khon Kaen. Currently, transportation to the national park is quite convenient. Therefore, it is suitable for both one day trip, or an overnight trip, especially during the winter in which the weather is soothing cool.
