Information  

           Salawin National Park spans the districts of Sop Moei and Mae Sariang in Mae Hong Son Province. The majority of the site is made up of high mountains and waterfront plains covered in mixed deciduous forests and deciduous dipterocarp forest, which are completely natural, with numerous scenic vistas and natural features, such as the Salawin River. It is approximately 450,950 rai or 721 square kilometers.

Background

         The Royal Forest Department considered the forest area surrounding the Salawin River (from beneath Mae Sam Leap Creek to Mae Hong Son province) in Salawin National Reserved Forest and Mae Yuam Fang-Khwa Forest in Mae Sariang and Mae La Noi District, Mae Hong Son Province are fertile and beautiful, suitable to be designated as a National Park. To get additional data of the area, Mr. Amporn Panmongkol, Forestry Technical Officer Level 4 at Doi Suthep - Pui National Park, was assigned to conduct an initial survey in accordance to the Royal Forest Department's order no. 504/2532, dated 28 March 1989 in that forest and adjacent areas. It was concluded to be suitable to be established as a National Park. in the Mae La Luang, Mae La Noi and Tha Pha Pup Sub-district, Mae La Noi District, Mae Khong, Ban Kuat, Mae Yuam and Sop Moei Sub-district, Mae Sariang District of Mae Hong Son Province. The National Park covers an area of approximately 1,013 square kilometers or approximately 632,125 rai.

     The Royal Forest Department has issued an order 1627/2532 dated October 19, 1989 asked Mr. Mongkol Chaidamronglert, Forest Ranger 7 Mae Sariang Regional Forest Office and Mr. Jane Thaphong, Forestry Officer Level.5, o further explore and  follow National Park Division It was suitable to mark the boundary of Salween National Reserved Forest which was the forest in the lower Salawin project (Mo Ro 11) outside the Wildlife Sanctuary to be a National Park. The National Park Committee meeting 1/2536 on 10 February 1993 approved the establishment of Salawin National Park in Mae Hong Son Province.

          Later, the decree marking of Mae Yuam Fang-Khwa Forest and Salawin Forest in Sao Hin, Ban Kat , Mae Khong and Mae Yuam Sub-district, Mae Sarieng District and Mae Sam Laep Sub-district in Sop Moei District, Mae Hong Son Province, to be established as a National Park, announced in the Government Gazette, Volume 111, Section 50 Ko, dated 9 November 1994.

       The Salawin National Park area is a fold mountains (complex mountain) that runs on a north-south axis in Thanon Thongchai Mountain range. It is located between 200 - 1027 meters above sea level, and the area's highest summit is located in the north. A fertile forest existssurrounded by the Yuum, Salawin, Mae Kong Kha, Mae Ngae, and Han rivers.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 
 

    The climate in the Salawin National Park is divided into 3 seasons: summer between March-May, rainy season between June - October, and winter between November - Februar.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

   

                    

        There is a diverse forest ecosystem consisting of mixed deciduous forest, dry evergreen forest and deciduous dipterocarp forest. Trees in the forests include essential plants such as Teak, Iron Wood, Burma Padauk, Tamalin, Black Rosewood, Anogeissus acuminata, Hopea odorata, Burma Sal, Burmese Sal, Hairy Keruing, and Dipterocarpus tuberculatus Roxb.
          There is significant wildlife too, including the Indian Muntjac, Sambar Deer, Serow, Bengal Tiger, Common Palm Civet, Civet, Bears, Porcupine, Bamboo Rat, Squirrels, Monkeys, Langur, gibbons, Wild Boars, Bats, and various birds. Reptiles include various snake species, Chameleons, Clouded Monitor Lizards, Skinks, Turtles, and Soft-Shelled Turtle. Amphibians include frogs such as the Green Frog, Asiatic Burrowing Frog, and Bush Frog.
There are two types of fish found in the Salawin River: endemic fish such as the Sardinella Razorbelly Minnow, Hypsibarbus Salawinensis, Blyth's Loach, Long-Fatty Finned Mystus, Putitor Mahseer, Red Tailed Mystus, Cobitidae, Devil Catfish, and common fish such as Giant Featherback, Catfish, Helicophagus, Walking Catfish, and Clarias macrocephalus.


How to get there by car :    

        From Mae Sariang District, travel approximately 4 kilometers along Provincial Highway No. 1194, then enter the intersection on the right-hand side and continue along the path for another 4 kilometers to reach the National Park Headquarters. If visitors wish to continue their journey to the National Park Ranger Station So Wo No. 4 (Ban Mae Sam Laep), they must travel approximately 50 kilometers by car (paved road). Visitors wishing to travel by passenger boat from Ban Mae Sam Laep to the National Park Ranger Station So Wo No. 1 (Ban Tha Ta Fang) can do so. A boat departs between 09:00  - 16:00 hrs., from Ban Sam Laep pier (Fare: 1,000 baht per ten passengers as of October 2006), covering approximately 20 kilometers.
