Information
Mae Charim National Park is home to numerous significant and valuable natural resources, including forest flora and wildlife. Along with the stunning scenery of forests, mountains, streams, and cliffs, the area was designated a National Park under the National Parks Act 1961 to ensure that it is preserved in its natural state remained unaltered. It is approximately 270,000 rai or 432 square kilometers in size. One of the more popular activities is White Water Rafting on the Wa Stream, over a course of approximately 20 kilometers from Ban Nam Pu, Mae Charim District, to Ban Hat Rai, Wiang Sa District, Nan Province.
Background
Mr. Wittaya Hongviangjan, Superintendent of Doi Phu Kha National Park, Nan Province submitted a letter to the National Parck Section recommending that the forest areas between Doi Phu Kha and Si Nan National Parks are pristine, with numerous stunning natural features and deserved to be protected and designated as a National Park. The National Park Section agreed to the recommendation and reported to the Royal Forest Department for further decision to implement the government's policy of conserving natural resources, including forests, wildlife, and watershed sources, and developing them as tourist attractions.
Royal Forest Department letter 1586/2537 dated September 13th, 1994 ordered Mr. Padung Yusomboon, Forestry Officer Level 5, National Park Division to act as the superintendent of Suphanburi province's Phu Muang Forest Park and Kanchanaburi province's Phra Thaen Dong Rang Forest Park and surveyed Nam Wa - Mae Charim National Reserved Forest, Nam Wa National Reserved Forest, Huai Sali Forest, and adjacent forest area in Mae Charim District, Wiang Sa District, and nearby districts to see if a National Park should be established in accordance to the National Park Acts 1961, and also served as the superintendent there.
According to the survey, such forest conditions are prevalent and endowed with stunning natural features. It is a significant source of water, and there are numerous wildlife species that make it suitable for designation as a National Park. The preliminary information was presented at the National Park Board meeting No. 2/2538 on May 18th, 1995, where the National Reserved Forest establishment was approved. Mae Charim National Park has been assigned a preparation. The headquarters of Mae Charim National Park are located at Ban Huai Sai Mun along Wa Stream, Moo 5, Nam Pai Sub-district, Mae Charim District, Nan Province.
The Royal Forest Department, in a letter No. Ko So 0712.3/1469 dated September 21st, 2000, drafted a royal decree that the Nam Wa and Mae Charim Forest areas, the Nam Nan Forest area in the southeast, and the Nam Wa and Huai Sali forest areas in Nam Phang and Nam Pai Sub-district, Mae Charim District and Rai Nan, San Na Nong Mai and Nam Muap Sub-district, Wiang Sa District in Nan Province were recommended as a National Park. A record of the principles and rationale for the decree, as well as accompanying map were prepared. It should be brought before the Cabinet for consideration and approval prior to announcing the law's enforcement.
The Office of the Council of State issued a letter No. No Ro 0606/801 dated 30 November 2000 requesting the Royal Forest Department to send a representative to a meeting to give more information on the draft decree on 7 December 2000. Mr. Naruemit Prajimtit, Forest Administration Officer Level 6, National Park Division, was assigned to give out information to consider the draft decree. The meeting resolution assigned a representative from the Royal Forest Department to correct some details on the map and other tasks according to the resolution.
Later, the Office of the Council of State issued a letter No. No Ro 0602/371 dated April 11th, 2001, stating that the review of the draft Royal Decree determining the Nam Wa Forest and Mae Charim Forest, Nam Nan forest in the southeast side and the Nam Wa forest and Huai Sali forest in the area of Nam Phang and Nam Pai, Lai Nan ,San Na Nong Mai and Nam Muap Sub-district, Mae Charim, Wiang Sa District, Nan Province has been completed and requested the Royal Forest Department to confirm its approval in the decree back to the Office of the Council of State. Then the Royal Forest Department approved the draft Royal Decree following letter No. Ko So 0712.3 / 11313 dated May 17th, 2001.
In 2007, a royal decree established the boundaries of Nam Wa and Mae Charim forests, Nam Nan forest in the southeast, and Nam Wa forest and Huai Sali forest in the northwest were established. The National Park in the Nam Phang and Nam Pai Sub-district, Mae Charim District and Lai Nan, San Na Nong Mai and Nam Muap Sub-district, Wiang Sa Districts of Nan Province was to become Thailand’s 106th National Park in the country, according to the Government Gazette, Volume 124, Section 31 Ko, dated July 6th, 2007.

The topographical features are that of Mae Charim National Park is complex mountain landscape that stretch from north to southwest at an elevation of more than 300 to 1,652 meters above sea level. The summit of Doi Khun Lan (1,652 meters) is the highest in the area, followed by Doi Dan Din (1,558 meters), Doi Khun Nam Pun (1,530 meters), and Doi Khun Khun (1,307 meters). Luang Prabang Mountain range originates in this area and flows westward for 7.5 kilometers , over which it is joined by several streams and creeks, such as Sai Mun Creek, Sa Si Creek, Bai Noi Creek, Bai Luang Creek, and Nam Phang Creek, The Paeng Stream which is a tributary of the Wa River is a waterway in this area. |
The climate is classified into three seasons: the rainy season, which is influenced by the southwest monsoon winds blowing from the Andaman Sea, winter, which is influenced by the northeast monsoon winds, and summer, which occurs in March through May. The rainy season influenced by the southwest monsoon between June and October. And winter, influenced by the northeast monsoon, transports cold from the North Pole to Thailand between November and February.

Mae Charim National Park is home to a mix of tropical rain forest, dry evergreen forest, hill evergreen forest, coniferous forest (pine forest), mixed deciduous forest, and deciduous dipterocarp forest. Wildlife in the area includes tigers, serow, bears, and peacocks.

How to get there by car :
Visitors can access the National Park from two directions
The first route is through Wiang Sa District from Phrae province. Follow the road through Ban Lai Nan, Ban Bun Rueang, and Ban Na Sa before turning right onto the road that travels through Ban Tha Kham, Ban Pakung, and Ban Huai Son. Turn left onto the road to Mae Charim District at Ban Huai Sai Mun and then right onto the road for Mae Charim National Park. The headquarters are approximately 4 kilometers from the entrance, with the total distances being approximately 31 kilometers between Wiang Sa District and Mae Charim National Park.
The second path from Nan Province crosses the Nan River Bridge on Highway No. 1168 and continues on the Nan - Mae Charim Highway, passing Wat Phra That Chae Haeng temple on the left. After 38 kilometers along Highway No. 1243 (Ban Na Sia - Ban Nam Muan), travel to Ban Huai Sai Mun, from which it is 15km until the left turn into Mae Charim National Park Headquarters. From there it is 4 kilometers to the headquarters, a total journey of 57 kilometers from Nan Province to Mae Charim National Park.
