Background

         The Royal Forest Department decided the best way to conserve the abundant national forest resources was to create a National Park. In June 13th,1996, government officials began to explore the Mae Lamao National Reserved Forest,  Mae Ramat National Reserved Forest and Sam Muen National Reserved Forest, Tak Province.

         The forest is fertile and contains significant and valuable natural resources in the form of plants and wildlife. There are waterfalls and breathtaking scenery that warrant the designation of a National Park, so in1996 September 5, the Royal Forest Department directed Mr. Tharakorn Udomtham, Forestry Officer, to survey and establish a National Park in this forest area and in late 1997 October 21, the Royal Forest Department directed appointed Mr. Annop Bunthem as Forestry Officer to act as area control supervisor Mae Kasa National Park was established in Tak Province.

          Mae Kasa National Park was renamed “Khun Phawo National Park” in honor of Phawo, oausing Karen tribe, who was a military officer and Great King. They were appointed Dan Mae Lamao during the reign of King Taksin and helped flight for the Thai nation’s independence until his death. The Protected Area Regional Office examined and considered the proposed National Park and agreed to it. By authorizing the renaming of Mae Kasa National Park as Khun Phawo National Park.

           The Director-General of the Royal Forest DepartmentForestry Officer, Senior Levelappointed Mr Prasat Kamnort as Khu Phawo NationalPark Senior on March 20th 2003and Khun Phawo National Park was established as Thailand’s 115th national park  on December 23rd  2009. It covers an area of  approximately 247,957 rai or 397 square kilometers near Mae Ramat and Mae Sot in Tak.

          Khun Phawo National Park contains a lush forest in a region of fold mountains (complex mountain). There is also tropical rain forest, which is densely covered. This National Park is surrounded by breathtaking scenery and nature is diverse. It is also the source of numerous creeks, and an ideal destination for visitors and a place to rest.

          The major topographical feature is composed of high fold mountain (complex mountain) with elevations from 350 to 900 meters above sea level. It is a catchment area for the Mae Lamao Creek, Luek Creek, Phawo Creek, Mae Kasa Creek, Mae Kit Luang Creek, and Mae Cha Rao Creek, which flow into the agricultural areas of Mae Sot and Mae Ramat District in Tak Province.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


       The weather in Khun Phawo National Park is cl’ssified as rainy due to the Andaman Sea’s influence, which results in prolonged periods of rain. The climate is similar to that of the southern Andaman Sea, which means it t is cool all year. Even in the summer, the climate is pleasant, and it is foggy and windy in the winter when the weather is here.          Khun Phawo National Park’s forest resources
Due to the fertile soil and diversity of forest species, both deciduous and non-deciduous forests reside here:
       - Hill Evergreen Forest
Hill Evergreen Forest is over 1,000 meters r above sea level and is primarily found in the northern high mountains. Visitors to Khun Phawo National Park can find an hill evergreen forest on the hilltops, with the following plants thriving; Lithocarpus cerifera, Pine, Duabanga grandiflora, Phyllanthus emblica, Michelia champaca, Mammea siamensis, Embelia subcoriacea, Dillenia aurea Sm, Schima wallichii, Chukrasia velutina, Archidendron jiringa, Kaempfceria pulchra, Madhuca thorelii, Artocarpus rigidus Blume, and Dendrocalamus hamiltonii.

       - Dry Evergreen Forest
In Khun Phawo National Park, the dry evergreen forest is found in the valley and along the river approximately 500 meters above sea level. Dipterocarpus, Malabar Iron Wood, Mangifera caloneura, Dimocarpus longan Lour, and Baccaurea ramiflora Lour  the Common Fig (Ficus carica), the Golden Fig (Ficus maxima), the Lagerstroemia calyculata Kurz  are among the most common trees.
        - Coniferous Forest (Pine Forest)
Coniferous Forest (Pine Forest) are found on mountain summits and ridges 200 meters or more above  sea level in Khun Phawo National Park, and are occasionally found in deciduous forest and hill evergreen forest. Merkus Pine (Pinus merkusii Jungh & De Vriese), Khasiya Pine (Pinus kesiya Royle ex Gordon), Lithocarpus cerifera, Melanorrhoea glabr, Burmese sal, and Hairy Keruing are prominent. 

        - Mixed Deciduous Forest
Thi’ type of forest can be found in the country’s northern region and it is prominent in Khun Phawo National Park. The mixed deciduous forest is a sparsely forested area dominated by medium-sized trees. The forest area is uncluttered, with a variety of bamboo and teak species coexisting alongside Xylia xylocarpa, Burmese Padauk, Bischofia javanica, Terminalia alata Heyne, Beleric myrobalan, Dalbergia cultrata Graham, Haldina cordifolia, Gamari, and others. ’

Khun Phawo National Park’s Wildlife:
     Bears, Indian Muntjac, Wild Boars, Wild Fowl, Frogs, Malayan porcupine, Sunda Pangolin, Kloss’s Mole, Squirrels, Common Palm Civet, Burmese Hare, Bats, Mongoose, Cobra, and King Cobra, as well as various birds, butterflies and other insects are the most common animals. The animals that were spotted but more rarely includeSerows, Asian Golden Cats, Gibbons, and Great Hornbills.

    How to get there by car : 

        Khun Phawo National Park is located approximately 140 kilometers north of Tak town and 50 kilometers south of Mae Sot town. Visitors can travel from either directions.
Route 1:
Take Highway No. 105 from Tak town through Mae Sot and Mae Ramat District.
Then continue straight for 16 kilometers along National Highway No. 1175 to reach Khun Phawo National Park.

Route 2:
To reach Khun Phawo National Park from Tak town, take the Phahon Yothin Highway to Ban Tak district and turn left onto Highway No.1175.
