The total area of Op Khan National Park is approximately 302,500 rai or 484 square kilometers and includes theSamoeng National Reserved Forest, which is located in Samoeng Tai, Mae Sap and Bo Kaeo Sub-district, Samoeng District, Mae Khan-Mae Wang National Reserved Forest which is located in Mae Win, Ban Kat, Don Pao and Thung Pi Sub-district, Mae Wang District, Nam Bo Luang Sub-district, San Pa Tong District, Tha Chang-Mae Khanin Forest, which is located in Nam Phrae and Ban Pong Sub-district, Hang Dong District in Chiang Mai Province The majority of the terrain is made up of hi’h mountains, including Khun Tian’s summit at 1,550 meters, which is surrounded by stunning natural features such as Op Khan, Op Hai, Pha Tup, Takataen Cave, Huai Hok Cave, Mae Sapok Waterfall, and Khun Win Waterfall. Additionally, there are numerous significant plant and wildlife species.
Background
Natural disasters occur frequently nation wide, most notably one such as floods in southern Thailand in November 1988 resulting in the issuance of the Emergency Decree to close all logging concessions (except for those in forest), and in 1989, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives announced a policy aimed at increasing forest conservation. By directing the Royal Forest Department to act quickly, the preliminary exploration of 28 forest areas throughout the country, including the National Reserved Forest, Mae Taeng Forest, Mae Rim Forest, and Mae Samoeng Forest, Mae Khan-Mae Wang Forest and Tha Chang-Mae Khanin Forest in Chiang Mai Province started. This is one of the areas chosen for the initial survey and in According to Royal Forest Department order 1627/2532 dated October 19, 1989, Mr. Thaweechai Kumpira was tasked with further exploration and establishment of a National Park, as well as serving as its head.
The National Park Division considered approving the National Park in its current configuration, but decided to conduct a survery According to National Park Board Meeting No. 2/2535 dated May 25th, 1992, the Royal Forest Department was authorizedto conduct a survey in order to establish the Op Khan National Park in Chiang Mai Province. The Royal Forest Department determined in 1961 that it should be established as a National Park by submitting a draft decree establishing a National Park under Section 6 of the National Park Act..
The National Park, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation Department currently gathered data in order to further establish it as a National Park.

Op Khan National Park is in a location with primarily high fold mountainห (complex mountain) along Thanon Thongchai Mountain range. They are connected to Doi Inthanon, and range in elevation from 300 to 1,338 meters above sea level. The highest summit, Khun Huai Pa Lao, is home to a deciduous dipterocarp forest, a mixed deciduous forest, a dry evergreen forest, and a hill evergreen forest. It is also a significant source of water for the Khan river Basin, which runs through the heart of the National Park area for 32 kilometers, which contributes to th’ nourishment of the ecosystem. Additionally, residents on both sides of the stream may utilize the water before it continues to flow into the Ping River.

Summers are generally hot and winters are quite cold, and the rainy season is short. Summer is the longest season.

Due to the predominantly high-low complex mountain terrain, numerous forest types exist, including deciduous dipterocarp forest, mixed deciduous forest, and dry evergreen forest. Between 400 and 800 meters above sea level the area is covered by hill evergreen forest and a coniferous forest (pine forest). The important plants are Irvingia malayana, Anisoptera costata, Toona ciliata, Glochidion lanceolarium, Tetrameles, Dipterocarpus, Lithocarpus cerifera, Michelia champaca, Schima wallichii, Cinnamon, Styrax benzoides Craib, Merkus Pine (Pinus merkusii Jungh & De Vriese), Khasiya Pine (Pinus kesiya Royle ex Gordon), Teak, Burma Sal, Burmese sal, Dipterocarpus tuberculatus, Burma Padauk, Black Rosewood, Dipterocarpus alatus, Lagerstroemia calyculata Kurz Schleichera oleosa, Vitex pinnata, Terminalia chebula, and various types of bamboo. It also discovered a numb’r of rare plant species, including Lady’s Slipper. Wildlife living in the area include Serow, Indian Muntjacs, Binturong, Asiatic Black Bears, Fishing Cats, Asian Golden Cat, Mouse Deer, Common Palm Civet, Wild Hare, Wild Boar, Gibbons, Slow Lorise, Mongoose, Porcupine, Golden Jackals, Squirrels, Chipmunks, and Rats, as well as various Asiatic Softshell Turtle, Big-headed Turtl, Cybister limbatus , as well as different birds. |
How to get there by car :
There are two ways to reach Op Khan National Park.
• From Chiang Mai city, travel approximately 15 kilometers along the irrigation canal road to Hang Dong district, where you will turn right onto the Office of Accelerated Rural Development’s Nam Phrae-Op Khan Road and continue approximately 11 kilometers to the National Park Headquarters.
• From Chiang Mai city, travel approximately 11 kilometers along National Highway No. 108 (Chiang Mai-Hot), turn right beside Hang Dong District Office and continue along the irrigation canal, along the Office of Accelerated Rural Development’s Nam Phrae-Op Khan Road, for approximately 11 kilometers until visitors reach the National Park Headquarters.
