Information
The Pha Daeng National Park: The general public is aware of and familiar with Chiang Dao National Park, which was previously known as Chiang Dao National Reserved Forest, for its waterfalls and viewpoints. Mr. Chodok Charungkon, Forest Officer Level 5 working at National Parks Division, has been assigned by an order 475/2532, dated March 23rd, 1989, by the Royal Forest Department to conduct a preliminary survey in the Lum Nam Mae Fang National Reserved Forest, Chiang Mai Province, and the National Reserved Forest, Chiang Dao Forest, Wiang Haeng and Chiang Dao District. It has been further investigated in accordance with Royal Forest Department order 1627/2532 for the purpose of establishing a National Park pursuant to Section 6 of the National Park Act 1961.
Additionally, the National Park Headquarters has requested to use the name Chiang Dao National Park in accordance to the National Park letter No. 0713 (Cho Do)/9 dated February 27th, 2533. Tthe Director-General of the Royal Forest Department (Mr. Pairoj Suwankon) approved on March 23rd, 2533 as the name has been used for the the National Reserved Forest and the Chiang Dao District is well-known to the public.
Background
The National Park Committee Meeting No. 1/1995, held on March 7th, 1995, approved a resolution authorizing the Royal Forest Department to conduct a survey in order to establish the Chiang Dao National Park through the submission of a draft decree defining a National Park area under Section 6 of the National Park Act 1961. The Cabinet Secretariat issued a letter No. No Ro 0204/5718, dated May 9th, 2000, confirming the cabinet resolution approving the draft decree establishing the Chiang Dao Forest demarkation in the areas of Mueang Na, Thung Khao Phuang, and Ping Khong Sub-district, Chiang Dao District, Piang Luang, Saen Hai, and Wiang Haeng Sub-district in Wiang Haeng District, as well as Mae Fang River Basin Forest in Nong Bua and Si Dong Yen Sub-district in Chai Prakarn District, Chiang Mai Province a National Park.
It was examined and revised by the Office of the Council of State to ensure that it is more accurate and appropriate. In 2000, the Cabinet presented a draft royal decree designating this land area as a National Park requesting to declare into effect. According to letter No. No Ro 0204/14602 dated November 6, 2000, the royal decree was signed and published in the Government Gazette, Volume 117, Section 98 Ko, dated November 2nd, 2000 using the name “Chiang Dao National Park”. Later in March 2006, Chiang Dao National Park was proposed changing its name to "Pha Daeng National Park" due to the fact that many visitors were mixed up between "Chiang Dao National Park" and "Doi Luang Chiang Dao Wildlife Sanctuary" and the park's general terrain composed of numerous red cliffs. As a result, they have retained the name "Pha Daeng National Park" to this day.
